Quick answer: A bug-out bag keeps you going for 72 hours if you have to leave home in a hurry. Pack it by priority: shelter and warmth, water plus a filter and purification tablets, fire and light, three days of no-cook food, first aid and medications, a knife, cordage and duct tape, a radio, power bank, maps and a whistle, and copies of your ID and documents plus cash. Keep it under about 20–25% of your body weight, and check it every six months.

Wildfire evacuations, floods, hurricanes, chemical spills, a gas leak on your street: the reasons people actually have to leave home on short notice are ordinary, and the warning can be measured in minutes. A bug-out bag means those minutes go on getting people and pets into the car, not on hunting for chargers and prescriptions. It’s not about the apocalypse. It’s about a bad week.

The rule of threes (why the order matters)

Survival instructors teach a rough priority list: people can survive about 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter in harsh weather, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. The numbers are approximate, but the order is right. Pack protection from the elements and water before snacks.

The checklist

Shelter and warmth

  • Tarp or emergency bivvy, plus a lightweight emergency blanket
  • Insulating layer (fleece or puffy), a warm hat, rain jacket
  • Spare socks. Wet feet end walks.

Water

  • 1–2 litres carried in a bottle or bladder
  • A water filter plus purification tablets (filters don’t stop viruses; tablets do)
  • The usual guideline is one gallon per person per day, but a gallon weighs 8.3 lb, so plan to purify rather than carry

Fire and light

  • Two ways to make fire: lighter, ferro rod, stormproof matches, plus tinder
  • Headlamp and spare batteries

Food

  • Three days of compact, no-cook calories: bars, nut butter packets, jerky, dried fruit

First aid and health

  • First-aid kit with blister care, a tourniquet if you’re trained to use it, pain relievers, antihistamine
  • A week of prescription medications, spare glasses, sunscreen

Tools

  • Fixed-blade knife or multitool, 50 ft of paracord, duct tape, work gloves, N95 masks (smoke and dust)

Communication and navigation

  • Charged power bank and cables, a hand-crank or battery NOAA weather radio
  • Paper maps of your area with evacuation routes marked, a compass, a whistle

Documents and money

  • Copies of ID, insurance, prescriptions and property records in a waterproof bag (or on an encrypted USB stick)
  • Cash in small bills. Card readers go down when the power does.
  • A written list of emergency contacts. You probably don’t know your family’s numbers by heart.

Keep it light enough to carry

Everyone overpacks the first time. Put the bag on and walk a few miles with it. The common backpacking guideline is around 20–25% of body weight at most, and less if you’re not used to carrying a pack. Cut duplicates, trade heavy items for lighter ones, and remember that the bag probably rides in a car for the first leg.

Maintain it

Every six months, for example when the clocks change:

  • Rotate food and water, and check medication and battery expiry dates
  • Swap clothing for the coming season
  • Update documents, cash and contact lists
  • Charge the power bank and test the headlamp and radio

Frequently asked questions

What should be in a bug-out bag?

Shelter and warm layers, water and purification, fire starters and a light, three days of food, first aid and medications, a knife and cordage, a radio and power bank, maps, a whistle, documents and cash.

How much water should a bug-out bag have?

Carry 1–2 litres plus a filter and tablets. The guideline is a gallon per person per day, but it’s heavy.

How heavy should a bug-out bag be?

No more than about 20–25% of your body weight.

How often should I check it?

Every six months.
