How to Lock Down Your Online Accounts in One Hour

Quick answer: Do it in this order: (1) secure your email with a unique password plus a passkey or authenticator app, (2) get a password manager and replace reused passwords, (3) turn on passkeys or app-based two-factor for banking, shopping and social accounts, (4) save recovery codes offline, (5) remove old devices and app access, (6) freeze your credit at all three bureaus (free in the US), and (7) turn on automatic updates. It takes about an hour.

Most account takeovers aren’t clever. Someone’s password leaks in a breach at a site they forgot they’d joined, attackers try it everywhere else, and the one account where it still works is the one with the password-reset keys to everything. This checklist closes those doors in the order that matters. The interactive checklist below keeps track of where you are.

The one-hour plan

1. Your email account (15 minutes)

Your inbox is the master key: “forgot password” on nearly every site sends a link there. Give it a unique long password or passphrase, turn on a passkey or an authenticator app, and check that the recovery phone and email are current and actually yours.

2. Password manager and reused passwords (15 minutes)

Install a password manager. Let it check for reused and breached passwords; most have this built in. Change the reused ones in this order: email, banking, shopping sites with saved cards, social media, then everything else as you come across it.

3. Passkeys or app-based two-factor (10 minutes)

Wherever an account offers passkeys, use them. They can’t be phished or reused. Otherwise use an authenticator app rather than SMS codes. SMS is better than nothing, but it’s vulnerable to SIM-swap scams.

4. Recovery codes (5 minutes)

When you turn on two-factor, most services offer backup codes. Print them or store them in your password manager, so a lost phone doesn’t lock you out.

5. Devices and connected apps (5 minutes)

In your Google, Apple, Microsoft and social account settings, review signed-in devices and third-party apps with access. Remove anything you don’t recognise or no longer use.

6. Freeze your credit (10 minutes, US)

A freeze stops anyone opening new credit in your name. It’s free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, doesn’t affect your score, and you can lift it temporarily when you apply for credit yourself.

7. Automatic updates (2 minutes)

Turn on automatic updates for your phone, computer and browser. Most real-world attacks exploit holes that already have a fix.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the most important account to secure first?

Your primary email. It resets everything else.

Are passkeys better than passwords?

Yes. There’s nothing to steal or reuse, and they only work on the real site.

Is SMS two-factor safe?

Better than nothing, but an authenticator app or passkey is stronger because SMS can be hijacked by SIM swaps.

Does freezing my credit cost money?

No. It’s free at all three US bureaus and doesn’t affect your score.
