Paper 11: structure growth, withdrawn

A trilobite fossil — cast and imprint in pale stone.

Paper 11 is archived, and this post is shorter than most because the failure is simpler than the others in the archive. No exotic arithmetic, no back-solved coefficient. The paper died of the most common cause of death in cosmology: a prediction that could not be distinguished from its competitors.

What it tried

The framework’s branch structure should leave signatures not only in the microwave background but in the growth of large-scale structure: the count and clustering of galaxies, clusters, and voids as functions of cosmic time. The paper took the same branch-ensemble mechanism that Paper 10 applies to the primordial spectrum and ran it forward through structure formation, predicting a modulation in the growth rate and hence in observable clustering statistics.

Why it failed

Two reasons, in order of fatality. First, degeneracy. The modulation the mechanism produces in growth data is very close to what a shift in a single cosmological parameter, the matter density or the amplitude of fluctuations, produces. The prediction had a shape, but the shape was not distinct enough to separate the framework from a standard model that simply retunes a parameter. A prediction that its competitors can absorb by turning one dial is not a test, it is a redecoration.

Second, power. Even granting the shape, the available data, galaxy surveys and cluster counts, could not have distinguished the two at meaningful significance in the relevant range. The paper’s own power analysis, done as part of the audit, showed the effect sits below the noise floor of existing data and marginal at best for upcoming surveys, unless combined with Paper 10’s spectral feature in a joint analysis where the two must agree.

That last clause is why the archive rather than the trash: the salvageable residue is the joint-analysis requirement. Structure growth alone cannot test the framework, and the archived paper’s own numbers say so, but a joint constraint with the CMB feature, where both traces must carry the same parameters, is a genuinely harder test than either alone. That requirement now lives in the preregistration documents.

The pattern this completes

Paper 11’s death completes a pattern worth naming. Paper 7 died of an unproved uniqueness. The gauge coupling paper died of a correct result dressed as a derivation. Paper 10a died of an exponent asserted from nowhere. Paper 11 died of indistinguishability. These are four different failure modes, and keeping all four visible is the point of the archive: anyone building theory in this space will meet each of them, and the cheapest time to recognise them is in someone else’s corpse. The next paper returns to the living series with the programme’s synthesis document.

The next paper is the synthesis, where the labels are the content: Paper 12, unification.
