By OMMAIS: Claude Opus 5.5 using Claude Cloud Provider
Quick answer: For writing, try Claude. For answers with sources, Perplexity. If you use Gmail and Google Docs, Gemini. On Windows, Microsoft Copilot. For maths and code, DeepSeek, though its data is stored in China. For no account, Duck.ai. For privacy, run open models on your own computer with Ollama or LM Studio. And to have several models work one question together, use OMMAIS Chat. All of them have free plans.
Full disclosure: OMMAIS is built by the author of this blog. It’s in this list on its merits, which are different from the others’, and the comparison below tries to be fair to everyone.
ChatGPT made AI chat mainstream, but it’s no longer the only good option, and for plenty of jobs it isn’t the best one. The free alternatives have become very capable. What separates them now is less raw intelligence and more what they’re built around: writing, search, your existing apps, privacy, or how many models get a say.

The alternatives, one by one
Claude: best for writing
Anthropic’s Claude is widely regarded as the strongest writer of the major assistants, careful with long documents and good at following detailed instructions. The free plan is a good first stop if you want something like ChatGPT without its particular habits.
Google Gemini: best if you live in Google’s apps
Gemini’s advantage is where it lives: Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android. If most of your work is already in Google’s apps, it saves the copy-and-paste.
Microsoft Copilot: ChatGPT’s models, built into Windows
Copilot runs on OpenAI’s models and comes with Windows and Edge. It’s the closest thing to ChatGPT that isn’t ChatGPT.
Perplexity: best for answers with sources
Perplexity searches the web for each question and shows its sources, so you can check what it says. For research and current events, that makes it the most trustworthy option here.
DeepSeek: strong at maths and code
DeepSeek’s models are strong at technical reasoning and free to use. The trade-off: according to its privacy policy, user data is stored in China. Decide whether that matters for what you’re asking.
Le Chat: the European option
Mistral is a French company, and Le Chat is its assistant. It’s a reasonable choice if you’d rather your data stayed with an EU-based provider.
Duck.ai: no account at all
DuckDuckGo’s Duck.ai gives anonymous access to several models without signing up. It’s handy for quick questions you’d rather not attach to an account.
Ollama and LM Studio: the private option
Both run open models such as Llama, Qwen and Gemma on your own computer. Nothing is sent anywhere, they work offline, and they’re free. The catch is hardware: a small model runs on almost any laptop, but the smarter ones need a good graphics card.
OMMAIS Chat: a panel of models on one question
OMMAIS Chat works differently from everything above. Every other tool gives you one model’s answer. OMMAIS can put a panel on the question:
- A planning seat splits the work and writes a brief for each specialist.
- Three specialists, each on a different model, take a part each. Different models make different mistakes.
- A judging seat weighs where they disagree, and the numbers are cross-checked by arithmetic.
- A final seat writes one answer, and you can watch every seat think.
It runs in your browser for free. By default it uses a free cloud model, with no setup. If you install Ollama, you can switch any seat to your own models, and with every seat local nothing leaves your computer. You can also bring a key from any of 21 cloud providers, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google included, and mix their models on one panel. Simple questions still get a single quick answer. The panel is for when a question deserves more.
How to choose
- You want the best single answer to a writing task: Claude.
- You need to check facts: Perplexity.
- Your work is in Google or Microsoft apps: Gemini or Copilot.
- Privacy matters most: your own models, through Ollama, LM Studio or OMMAIS Chat.
- The question is hard enough that you’d want a second and third opinion: OMMAIS Chat’s Deep mode.
Frequently asked questions
